GASSEL DRIPSTONE CAVE

The insider tip for visitors to the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria

A spacious pit cave with plentiful and gorgeous dripstone, the Gassel Cave is family-friendly and also illuminated. A serviced mountain hut located at the cave's entrance offers a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. Shuttle bus service available from Ebensee. A hiking trail to the top of the mountain offers a stunning view down on Lake Traunsee.

 

Location:
The Gassel Cave is situated on the east shore of Lake Traunsee near Ebensee. It's an alpine cave with the largest number of dripstone formations of all of the Northern Limestone Alps. A serviced mountain hut is located at the entrance. Elevation: 1,229 meters (4,032 ft).

How to get there:

 

  • A 2.5-hour hike from Rindbach on a marked hiking trail.
  • Alternatively, the Cave Bus offers rides from Ebensee, with a remaining 30-minute hike to the cave.
  • Open from the beginning of May to mid-September.
  • Guided 50-minute tours on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
  • Total time needed: Approx. 4 to 7 hours.
